Milwaukee's housing runs old. Census figures put roughly a third of the city's homes in the pre-1940 category, and sewer laterals from that era were commonly laid in clay tile or cast iron. Joints that have sat underground for most of a century give roots, grit and grease plenty of places to catch.
The lateral is the pipe that carries everything from your house to the public sewer in the street. MMSD describes it as the property owner's section of the system, and Wauwatosa states the rule plainly: homeowners are responsible for the lateral up to and including the connection to the city main.
In practice that means a familiar sequence. Tosa crews check the city line, and if the city line is open, the blockage is in the lateral or the house plumbing and needs a plumber at the owner's cost. That is the call we take.
About 6% of MMSD's service area, all of it inside the City of Milwaukee and the Village of Shorewood, uses combined sewers that carry stormwater and sewage in one pipe. Shorewood reports that roughly 60% of the village is served this way and warns that long or intense rain can overwhelm the system and cause basement backups.
The county saw the worst case on July 22, 2010. The National Weather Service recorded 5 to 9 inches of rain in parts of Milwaukee County over 24 hours, and the city fielded at least 2,000 calls about sewage backing into basements.
Nobody can stop a storm like that, but your own lateral does not have to make it worse. A line narrowed by roots or sludge drains slowly even on a dry day, so clearing it and the floor drain ahead of the rainy season gives wastewater a better path out.
Most calls from Milwaukee, Cudahy, Franklin and the rest of the county fall into a handful of patterns. Bathrooms collect hair and soap scum, kitchen lines collect grease and food, and over months those deposits harden until water barely moves.

Nearly every plumbing headache in a Milwaukee County home lands in one of two buckets. The supply side brings fresh water in through pipes, valves and fixtures, and when it fails you notice low pressure, a drip under the sink or no water at all.
The drain side carries wastewater, debris and everything you flush or rinse away. Trouble there shows up as slow sinks, gurgling toilets or water rising through a basement floor drain after a storm.
Knowing which side is acting up helps you describe the problem when you call, and that shortens the visit. We handle both, so you do not need one company for the leak and another for the clog.
A family with one bathroom, a landlord with rentals in several suburbs and a restaurant that cannot open with a flooded floor drain all need the same thing: a clear diagnosis in plain language and a fix that holds.
Our routine never changes. We assess the drain system, pick the method that suits that particular blockage, clear it, and then run water to confirm the line flows freely before we pack up. Customers often mention Rick by name in their Google reviews, and that steady, explain-it-first approach is a big part of why.

FAQ
MMSD describes the lateral, the pipe from your house to the public sewer, as the property owner's section. Wauwatosa, for one, holds homeowners responsible up to and including the connection at the main. Rules differ by municipality, so check with yours if the trouble seems to be near the street.
Heavy rain fills the public sewers, and a lateral already narrowed by roots or sludge cannot empty fast enough. In the combined-sewer parts of Milwaukee and Shorewood, storm runoff and sewage share the same pipes, which adds even more load. Cleaning the lateral and floor drain is the first step we recommend.
Yes. Along with the North Shore villages of Shorewood and Whitefish Bay, we cover Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, West Allis, Greenfield, Greendale, Oak Creek, Franklin and Cudahy.
Always. We explain what we found, what we recommend and what it costs, and nothing starts until you say yes. You will not get padded pricing or a pitch for extras you do not need.
Often, yes. Video of the inside of the line shows whether you need a cleaning, root removal or a spot repair, so you are not paying to dig where nothing is wrong. We are happy to show you the footage.
Ask whether they serve your municipality, whether they answer after hours and whether they handle both fixture clogs and main sewer lines. Also ask if they will explain the problem and the price in plain terms before starting. We are happy to answer all four on the first call.
